Accomodation wanted

big_bird.jpgThe Finnish government has not instituted an immediate ban on outdoor poultry, but has decided to move up a deadline for the implementation of bird flu prevention measures following confirmed cases of the virus on the Baltic Sea.

The original plan called for poultry to be kept indoors during the main spring migration period, from mid-March to the end of May. A Ministry working group now says that this will be a requirement at the beginning of March.

If you have a spare room, then please notify your nearest official and you can keep a turkey, goose or chicken from roaming the streets of Finland.

nb. Please don’t furnish beds with feather pillows.

Pesticide Controversy

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006
PesticideA group of villagers in northern Kerala have become the centre of a controversial battle between environmentalists and a major cashew nut plantation.

The villagers blame pesticides used by the plantation for causing widespread physical and mental illness in hundreds of children and adults. But pesticide manufacturers say there is no scientific basis to the claims. They are fighting for the right to carry on using the chemicals.

Abinash is 12 but has the speech of a three year old. His big achievement this year was learning to crawl. He was born with cerebral palsy - just one in a whole generation of children in this small village of Padre with acute mental or physical problems.

Would you Adam & Eve it!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

deforestation.JPGAn international team of scientists says it has found a “lost world” in the Indonesian jungle that is home to dozens of new animal and plant species. “It’s as close to the Garden of Eden as you’re going to find on Earth,” said Bruce Beehler, co-leader of the group.

In their song The Last Resort, The Eagles sang: You call someplace paradise, Kiss it goodbye.

Pucker up Indonesia!

BTW - ‘Adam & Eve’ means ‘believe’ in cockney rhyming slang.

Helsinki, the 10th more expensive city in the world

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

Winter in HelsinkiI’m speechless and scared. Helsinki? Most of the people I know can not even pronounce the name correctly. When my friends visited me last summer, were shocked of the prices.

But then as I read somewhere, these surveys cover from shopping to baby-sitting and are for companies that have employees and executives living with their families abroad. Otherwise you can find your way in OVI and have a reasonable life.

bush.jpgPresident George W Bush has warned the US must break its “addiction” to oil, in his State of the Union address.
He said the US was too reliant on oil, often from “unstable” countries, and had to find alternatives.

Bush and ovi? It sounds like two good elements of a porn film.

“We are planning to build a permanent base on the moon by 2015,” said Nikolai Sevastyanov, head of the Energia space corporation, “By 2020, we can begin the industrial-scale delivery of the rare isotope helium-3.”

By 2022, we will have Greenpeace and other environmental groups donning their gravity boots and chaining themselves to space shuttles.

By 2025, former President Arnold will reprise his role in Total Recall, save civilization and reveal an alien oxygen-making machine below the surface of the moon.
